With all the noise around me recently, I was finding it very hard to be in my center. I got so overwhelmed coming back from my annual retreat into the big city that all the external noise started to affect my mind. Overloaded with thoughts all I wanted was some peace of mind.. the sweet sound of silence.
What’s ironic is that even though all I wanted was silence, that was the only thing I wasn’t able to do.. sit in silence. My mind was going a hundred miles an hour and I was getting anxious even thinking about quietening my mind. Everything I needed to do would be going round and round in my head.. even my meditation practice had to be “doing” something, cleansing my aura, balancing my chakras, manifesting my goals and all sorts mind activities.
All the surrounding and mental noise was affecting my clarity, focus and productivity. So I eventually plucked up my inner strength, sat in silence and persevered through the noise. After a few days of daily practice of sitting in silence and allowing space for my thoughts to quieten, I felt my inner peace emerge once again.
Silence sure is luxurious.
I was actually craving silence so much that I even unconsciously started using silence as a response. And in the process I have found that it is not necessary to speak in order to get your message across.
Silence can be the most powerful scream.
Silence speaks when words can’t. It can explain everything without using one word. It is certainly not a sign of weakness, in fact it can show confidence and strength in who you are, without needing approval from anyone. It can affirm your personal boundaries without any drama, making it the most eloquent reply.
Those who don’t understand your silence will never understand your words.
Observing the power of silence recently in different aspects of my life has been very interesting. Immersing myself in silence dissolved most of my worries, brought me inner peace, got my message across to people clearly and peacefully, gave me new awareness that I was not able to hear with all the noise. It even allowed a new sense of joy and ‘sureness’ to emerge in the midst of uncertainty.
In silence you can hear your soul.
That eternal part of you that is guiding your journey.
There is so much more to say about silence that the only way to understand it is really to experience it.
I encourage you to give it a go! Especially if your mind has been a bit noisy lately. Take a moment to sit in silence each day. This does take practice and all you need is to be willing to allow the silence to embrace the noise.
